As a scientist, I am delighted to establish and lead the School of Sciences, in addition to my main role as Rector of the University. In my opinion, all Universities should provide courses and research programmes in the sciences, to not only produce the scientists that the world increasingly requires, but also to ensure that all students have at least a basic grounding in computing and numeracy. These skills, in addition to literacy, are expected of all graduates regardless of their area of study, and are becoming ever more important as technology develops.
We have pursued this strategy here at UCLan Cyprus by beginning our science provision with a focus on computing and mathematics at undergraduate level. Our computing infrastructure and resources are world-class, as acknowledged through the award of the InAVation award, and this is a strength of UCLan Cyprus on which we will continue to build to ensure that our graduates are well prepared for employment and careers in our changing modern world.
In addition to BSc (Hons) Computing and BSc (Hons) Mathematics, we are expanding our science provision from this October to include a postgraduate course in computing (MSc Computing) and we are also launching Psychology as a subject for the first time, with BSc (Hons) Psychology. As with all programmes at UCLan Cyprus, our courses map against those in the UK, and also meet the requirements of the ECPU, so that they are recognised here in Cyprus.
I look forward to adding more science subjects to our portfolio in the future, as we continue to develop and grow our School of Sciences. Our School is staffed by research active academics here in Cyprus, who are supported by similar academics at UCLan in the UK, and it is the quality of these staff that is the greatest strength of the School. I would encourage you to look at the profiles of these staff here on our website to find out more about them and their research interests. We will be adding more staff to our school over this summer period to ensure that we continue to maintain our excellent staffing profile and research activities.
I hope that I will be able to meet you at one of our open day events here on our campus, and that you will decide to join us on our adventure by continuing your academic career on one of our courses.
