PREPARED (1/9/22-31/8/25) – HORIZON-WIDERA-2021-ERA-01-90
PREPARED stands for ‘Pro-active Pandemic Crisis Ethics and Integrity Framework’, and the project’s objective is to develop an ethics and integrity framework to support rapid and effective research during global crises. Bringing together 16 partner teams from three continents, project outputs include (i) an interdisciplinary, accessible, and jargon-free code of conduct for research during global crises, (ii) ‘how to’ guidelines to support the needs of research teams, and (iii) engaging training and capacity building materials, to be disseminated across the Globe. This will be achieved through the project’s extensive network of 14 advisors, coming from five continents. The majority of team leads are women, and the consortium will be supported by two European artists and an African photographer and documentary maker.
Coordinator: UCLan Cyprus, School of Law. Partners include leading think tanks, grassroots civil society organisations (ICLAIM with Prof. Stephanie Laulhe Shaelou as Lead), and international organisations, such as UNESCO and the WHO. The project based in Cyprus constitutes a new fundamental threshold for research and innovation on the island on a topic of great significance world-wide, and brings new opportunities for Cyprus-based academics to share their expertise while tackling challenges of a truly global nature.
Total budget: 4,201,758 euros.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme Under Grant Agreement no. Project 101058094.
VERITY (1/9/22-31/8/25) – HORIZON-WIDERA-2021-ERA-01-44
Scientific advancements are not enough if they are not accompanied by sufficient consideration of societal perceptions and trust in science. Our project will develop a protocol for the stewards of trust to increase societal trust in science, research and innovation and the research and innovation institutions. The VERITY protocol will have open science and stakeholder participation at its core and consider society’s needs, expectations and values regarding science, research and innovation. Two concepts are fundamental for understanding the VERITY approach, i.e. the “stewards of trust” and the “ecosystem of trust”.
Total budget: 1,847,563 euros.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Programme Under Grant Agreement no. Project 101058623
Erasmus+, European Commission – Jean Monnet Action (2022-25)
Director of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence for the Rule of Law and European Values (CROLEV), 1 February 2022 (score obtained in November 2021, 93.5/100) Grant decision no 101047752 (total budget: 125,308 euros; European Commission grant: 100,000 euros)
CRoLEV is a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence co-funded by the European Union under the Erasmus+ programme 2021-27, Jean Monnet Actions for the years 2022-2025. The rule of law, democracy, and fundamental rights, jointly some of the fundamental values upon which the Union is built, are currently under threat, primarily in Central and Eastern Europe but also across the EU and in neighbouring countries. CRoLEV focuses on the study of the rule of law, and EU values and principles in turbulent times. It seeks to strengthen European studies in the region and disseminate research on the rule of law and European values in neighbouring countries, building bridges between the EU and its neighbours.
The project has several pillars including knowledge transfer, research, sustainable impact via data analysis and best practice in project management. Deliverables include project management handbook, code of conduct, terms of reference and operations for all governing bodies, project coordination plan, data management plan, dissemination and communication outputs and events, multiple online courses, a robust series of research outputs and indices.
This project has received funding from the European Union’s Erasmus+ Programme, Jean Monnet Actions Under Grant Agreement no. Project 101047752
Erasmus+, European Commission – Jean Monnet Actions (2019-22)
Module Leader and Academic Coordinator of the Jean Monnet Module ‘European Union Law and Governance in Populist Times’ (EU-POP) (2019-2022) – Grant decision no. 611421-EPP-1-2019-1-CY-EPPJMO-MODULE School of Law, UCLan Cyprus, 2019-22 (total budget: 33,824 euros).
The EU is faced with a threat to its very foundations through the rise of right-wing populist narratives and political parties. The current climate of uncertainty, migration flows, without adequate integration policies in many European countries, including Cyprus, and the rise of fake news, particularly online, constitute a fertile setting for the rise of right-wing populists. Such phenomena are damaging in themselves and also in their manifestation, such as in relation to the protection of the Rule of Law and human rights. The proposed module is established on research informed teaching of the soft and hard tools available at an EU level to challenge the right-wing populist threat and its manifestation in the form of (i) the deterioration of the rule of law or risk thereto (ii) hate speech including online hate speech and (iii) aggressive Euroscepticsm currently tainting Europe at a local, national and regional level.
