Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA) International Conference 2024 followed by the signing of an MoU between UCLan Cyprus and Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi
In October 2024, the School of Law of UCLan Cyprus with the support of its Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence for the Rule of Law and European Values CRoLEV, the Commonwealth Legal Education Association (CLEA), the Deputy Ministry of Shipping of the Republic of Cyprus and with the kind support of CyFOS and the Cyprus Marine Club, organised and hosted the CLEA International Conference 2024, which focused on “Law and Technology: Opportunities and Challenges for the Maritime and Shipping Sector in the EU and the Commonwealth”, under the auspices of H.E. The Deputy Minister of Shipping, Republic of Cyprus, Ms. Marina Hadjimanolis.
We were deeply honoured to welcome to campus esteemed guests including HMJ Surya Kant, Judge, Supreme Court of India, Dr R Venkataramani, Learned Attorney General for India, High Commissioner of India to Cyprus, Mr. Manish, and Ms. Athena Chrysostomou, on behalf of the Shipping Deputy Minister, Republic of Cyprus, who delivered insightful remarks and honoured the Conference with their presence. The programme included welcome addresses and keynote speeches by eminent speakers and guests. Panels covered several topical legal issues such as Artificial Intelligence and technologies as applied to the Rule of Law, Democracy and the Industry including the maritime, shipping and security sectors. Participants travelled to Cyprus from many Commonwealth countries to attend the Conference. Board members of CLEA offered their high-level expertise to the participants including Prof. Stéphanie Laulhé Shaelou, Professor of European Law and Reform, Head, School of Law and Director of the Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence for the Rule of Law and European Values, UCLan Cyprus and CLEA Executive Committee Member (Europe) on ‘Latest developments in AI in Europe – AI impact on human rights’ and Prof. (Dr.) S Sivakumar, Senior Professor/Member 21st Law Commission of India, Indian Law Institute, New Delhi and CLEA President on ‘Rule of Law in Digital Age’.
On this occasion, we were also very honoured to sign an MoU with the Jamia Hamdard University of New Delhi, India, whereby UCLan Cyprus and Jamia Hamdard will develop their academic links in the years to come. The MoU is open to all the disciplines at both institutions and include the promotion of relations among scholars, students and personnel, mutual expertise sharing, joint research, learning and knowledge transfer, exchange of best practices and any other activities of mutual benefit. The MoU was signed on behalf of UCLan Cyprus by Mr. Floros Voniatis, Chair of the Council and CEO, and on behalf of Jamia Hamdard, Prof. (Dr.) M. Afshar Alam, Vice Chancellor.
