INAUGURAL ANNUAL DINNER WITH THE JUDICIARY

SCHOOL OF LAW, UCLAN CYPRUS AT THE CLEOPATRA HOTEL ON 20 JANUARY 2017

On Friday 20 January 2017, the Law School of UCLan Cyprus held its inaugural Annual Dinner at the Cleopatra Hotel in Nicosia.

The Annual Dinner was preceded by a Key Note Speech delivered by the distinguished guest of honour, Mr Justice Myron Nicolatos, the President of the Supreme Court of Cyprus. In his Speech, the President of the Supreme Court examined the administration of justice in the Republic of Cyprus.  The President then fielded questions from students on subjects as diverse as ethics, the rule of law and the maxim that ‘justice delayed is justice denied’.

The Annual Dinner was attended by various members of the judiciary, the legal profession and academia, as well as law students.  All in all, the event enabled the law students and the other attendees to gain a realistic insight into what it is like to attend a formal dinner held in London at one of the four Inns of Court or at the Law Society of England and Wales.  Bearing in mind that some UCLan Cyprus law students are planning to pursue post-graduate legal studies in London and other parts of England, the Annual Dinner gave these students an enjoyable taste of what awaits them. It also filled all students with a sense of honour, duty and respect, answering the question ‘What is it like to belong to the global legal profession today’.

UCLan Cyprus would like to thank the President of the Supreme Court for his Key Note Speech, as well as Harris Kyriakides LLC, L. Papaphilippou & Co LLC and Chrysses Demetriades & Co LLC who kindly sponsored this historic and educationally enriching event. The programme of the event can be downloaded here. A transcript of the Key Note Speech is available here.
