Module Aims
Aim 1
This module aims to provide detailed coverage of the major developmental disorders, and the roles that Psychologists can take in helping those suffering from them, emphasising the social & emotional aspects of psychopathology
Module Content
Lectures will provide a solid grounding in the developmental psychopathology approach to mental disorders. For example:
•Developmental Psychopathology as a scientific discipline
•Developmental Psychopathology and disorder classification systems
•Developmental Psychopathology: Nature and nurture (this will cover the genetic and environmental influences on developmental psychopathology without overlapping with previous modules in developmental psychology).
•Risk and Resilience in Developmental Psychopathology (child maltreatment and trauma).
•Externalising Disorders (ADHD, CD, ODD)
•Pervasive Developmental Disorders (Autism Spectrum Disorders)
•Internalising Disorders (Anxiety and Depression – but not overlapping health psychology)
•Other Disorders (Intellectual disabilities, Eating Disorders, Bipolar Disorder, Self-harm, PTSD, Substance use etc.)
•Current topics in Clinical Developmental Neuroscience: contemporary (‘hot’) topics in developmental psychopathology.

On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:
Teaching Methods
The module consists of lectures and coursework support sessions. The lectures highlight the main theoretical and empirical issues and findings and direct the students’ reading. Coursework support sessions provide an opportunity to develop research ideas in discussion with other students and with the support of the module tutors.
Assessment Methods
This module is assessed through a coursework and an examination.
