The aim of this module is to develop students’ critical understanding of topics relating to the impact and consequences of crime from both social psychological and forensic perspectives. Content covers a range of topics relating to how impacts and consequences of crime relate to both individual both victims and society in general.

Module Content

This module investigates the impact and consequences of from both forensic and social psychological perspectives and considers these issues at the individual and the societal level. Lecture material covers a broad range of topics, such as:

1. Male victims of abuse
2. Antisocial behaviour and rioting
3. Hate crime and radicalisation impacts
4. Restorative Justice
5. Impacts of terrorism
6. Impacts of war/mass violence
7. Human Trafficking
8. Fear of crime
9. Developing victim empathy in offenders
10. Psychological trauma and crime

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:


Retrieve, select and critically review relevant scholarship and psychological research in relation to the impact of crime and its consequences in an independent fashion.


Critically discuss the practical applications of psychological research on the impact and consequences of crime in forensic and clinical settings.


Critically discuss the aetiology of the problems underlying crime in society and the impact on victims of crime.


Critically evaluate the efficacy of psychological theory in relation to crime impacts and consequences.
