Module Aims

Aim 1


Provide a clear and robust study framework to support and ensure the student undertakes a significant research project related to their own design trajectory as a prospective professional practitioner within the context of design.

Aim 2


Critically enhance the student’s skills in the production of a visually rich analytical report adopting media appropriate for their design discipline.

Aim 3


Enable students to be able to reach original conclusions.

Aim 4


Support the student’s inquiry within the realm of future trends grounded within historical and contemporary cultural context.

Module Content

This module enhances the student’s body of broad contextual and subject-specific knowledge base. The module is underpinned by a framework to empower independent study connected to the student’s design activities as follows:
• Identification and understanding appropriate and relevant contextual issues.
• Definition of research areas.
• Development of a plan of work and schedule.
• Critical and analytical discussion to consider research implications.
• Adoption of a clear and robust line of inquiry.
• Define innovative and original conclusions.
• Position the line of inquiry within the context of students’ practice.

On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:

 


Evaluate and critically examine trajectories of practice within a variety of contexts.


Apply in-depth knowledge of potential design issues in relation to their own future as practitioners.


Evaluate, critically examine, and apply a knowledge base and body of research.


Effectively communicate a robust critical discussion derived from independent research.


Produce a high quality and visually rich independent research project.

Teaching Methods

The teaching and learning activities of this module are designed to meet its learning outcomes in a challenging and yet supportive environment. Whilst the focus will be on student-initiated activity, a support framework will be provided in the form of lectures, seminar group discussions and reviews.
The student will be encouraged to access appropriate material that will foster a broader and deeper critical approach to their studies. The student’s body of research may require the analysis of newspapers, journals, exhibitions and competitions, site visits, interviews, film and social media as well as traditional sources.
Formative feedback will be provided mid-way through the module enabling the student to respond to opinions expressed should they so wish. The module culminates with summative assessment.
