Module Aims
Aim 1
To equip students with an appreciation of the social and environmental aspects of a career in engineering.
Module Content
The module is to develop students’ awareness of a broad range of social and environmental aspects of engineering. Indicative module content includes:
- Engineering career pathways, professional engineering institutions, including professional registration and codes of practice;
- Standardisation bodies and the importance of engineering standards;
- Ethics in engineering, technological developments and their impact on society;
- Influence of legislation on engineering activity, including safety and environmental protection;
- Intellectual property, including patenting, copyright, and plagiarism and;
- Commercial aspects of engineering activity, including marketing and business planning.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:
Teaching Methods
Weekly lectures, including talks from visiting speakers, present the module content to students. Students use their private study and research to build up a web portfolio of evidence of their achievement of learning outcomes 1 & 3 and are expected to participate in available employability programmes and professional networking events. Students will commentate on their own performance and also peer review work for learning outcome 2.
Assessment Methods
This module is assessed through a portfolio with commentary on topics and references.
