Module Aims

Aim 1


This module will develop key skills in Scholarship, Research and Technology to aid students with their academic studies. Using contemporary hospitality and tourism themes as a basis, students will develop oral, debating, academic writing and research skills in the context of a higher education environment. In short the module will equip students with a complete ‘toolkit’ of academic, personal and professional skills – laying the foundation for successful academic study across all modules and on which students can build upon each successive year of study.

Module Content

• Learning to learn: academic expectations including reading skills, note taking, reflecting, working in teams, learning styles, personal organisation and time management
• Communication: the development of written and oral communication and the ability to engage in debate
• Library skills – using the library catalogue, identifying different sources, using electronic databases and e-journals
• The development of academic referencing skills
• Investigation of relevant industry websites and trends in tourism, hospitality and events
• Making use of information technology: word processing, presentation tools, using social media and other forms of technology used in the tourism, hospitality and events sector
• Specific technology systems used in tourism, hospitality and events

On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:

 


Develop a range of academic, personal, research and transferable skills and be able to reflect on these skills in relation to a university career and future employment.


Investigate key sources of contemporary data and topical issues in the study of hospitality, events and tourism.


Examine a range of technologies appropriate to studying hospitality, events and tourism sectors.

Teaching Methods

This module will be taught yearlong through a series of workshop sessions which are delivered on the Cyprus campus. Many of the sessions will take place in a computer lab to focus on the practical activities involved in researching and writing. Skills will be developed in terms of reading, researching and academic writing along with written and oral communication. The first assessment will focus on the reflection of key skills and will be assessed via the action learning set. The second assignment is a portfolio to evidence learning in relation to tourism and hospitality technologies

Assessment Methods

This module is assessed through one Action Learning Sets/ Critical Discussion and one Portfolio.
