To introduce concepts and terminology related to the Internet.

To introduce working practices, standards, recommendations and specifications related to Internet Technologies.

Internet Fundamentals

Module Content

This module provides an introduction to the World Wide Web/Internet and their services, applications and tools. Module topics include Internet history, Internet-based facilities and applications (e.g. e-mail, web browsers, file transfer utilities, etc), and Web-based research and information resources. The World Wide Web service is emphasized and basic Web page creation with HTML is introduced.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:


Identify the different Internet standards and recognise how computers are connected to the Internet.


Identify common types of files and resources found on the Internet and recognized how different data is collected and stored.


Design and develop basic Web pages using HTML.


Recognise different societal issues and emerging technologies.


Recall information associated with privacy, ethical and legal concerns (including intellectual property rights) as they relate to the Internet.

Teaching Methods

The module will be delivered through a combination of lectures, discussion, hands-on laboratory, problem-solving, reading, researching, writing, and interaction with the tutor and other students, which are used to help students gain knowledge about the topic area. Workshops and projects may incorporate both individual and group learning.
During this module, student preparation and participation will play an important role in the overall learning environment. Substantial preparation will be required. Students will need to be prepared to apply concepts learned throughout the module, integrate them into projects, and use their critical thinking skills, logical analysis, and creativity.
Students are required to attend all timetabled learning activities for this module. Participation in the workshops is important for both their learning experience and that of their classmates.
