Language Pathology and Clinical Linguistics

Module Content

Clinical linguistics studies acquired and congenital disorders and delays of the human faculty for language. This module explores that faculty through the study of different pathologies that affect different domains of language. Indicative pathologies include: auditory processing disorder, age-related hearing loss, aphasias, Specific Language Impairment, Williams syndrome, autism-spectrum disorders, palsy, dementias, stuttering, dysarthria, and speech impediments. These pathologies and their causes are discussed, providing insights into the cognitive foundations of language.
This module also introduces and explains therapeutic approaches for the pathologies covered. This is accompanied by discussions of ethical considerations in clinical work, leading to an introduction to the relevant codes of medical and therapeutic ethics.
