Module Aims

Aim 1


Provide students with the opportunity to analyse and evaluate the relationship between fictional and filmic texts.

Aim 2


Encourage students to investigate the extent to which such texts are the product of social, political, cultural and generic contexts, and to be able to communicate the significance of these contexts.

Aim 3


Encourage students to explore such issues as the faithfulness and authenticity of adaptation.

Aim 4


Encourage students in their discussion, analysis and written assessment for this module to employ and assess a range of critical positions which may be relevant to a discussion of these texts.

Literature and Film

Module Content

This module will examine a range of literary texts from different genres which have been represented as film texts in the twentieth and twentieth-first century. The module will explore the strengths and weaknesses of such translations and examine issues such as authenticity and faithfulness of these adaptations.

On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:

 


Explain the significance of considering literature and literary adaptations within their generic context


Critically evaluate the process of adapting fictional texts for the cinema


Evaluate in a sophisticated manner the comparative merits of a wide range of literary adaptations


Engage with and interrogate theoretical models, and be able to reflect upon their application to literary adaptations


Recognise and communicate the significance of cultural and historical context in the analysis of literature and literary adaptations


Utilise skills in research and using information technology as a source for research projects


Appraise literary adaptations utilising appropriate critical and creative perspectives

Literature and Film

Teaching Methods

This module will be delivered on a weekly lecture and seminar basis. The lectures will offer an overview of critical and theoretical readings of literary adaptations, and the seminars will offer you the opportunity for a more detailed application and discussion of this material. It will also be necessary for you to attend specified film performances or ensure they watch these films as part of their preparation for the module.

This module is assessed through one Adaptation and critical evaluation and one Essay.
