Module Aims
Aim 1
Provide students with the opportunity to analyse and evaluate the relationship between fictional and filmic texts.
Aim 2
Encourage students to investigate the extent to which such texts are the product of social, political, cultural and generic contexts, and to be able to communicate the significance of these contexts.
Aim 3
Encourage students to explore such issues as the faithfulness and authenticity of adaptation.
Aim 4
Encourage students in their discussion, analysis and written assessment for this module to employ and assess a range of critical positions which may be relevant to a discussion of these texts.
Module Content
This module will examine a range of literary texts from different genres which have been represented as film texts in the twentieth and twentieth-first century. The module will explore the strengths and weaknesses of such translations and examine issues such as authenticity and faithfulness of these adaptations.

Teaching Methods
This module will be delivered on a weekly lecture and seminar basis. The lectures will offer an overview of critical and theoretical readings of literary adaptations, and the seminars will offer you the opportunity for a more detailed application and discussion of this material. It will also be necessary for you to attend specified film performances or ensure they watch these films as part of their preparation for the module.
Assessment Methods
This module is assessed through one Adaptation and critical evaluation and one Essay.
