Module Aims

Aim 1


This module aims to complement the Developmental Psychology aspects of PS2020, and to develop students’ knowledge of the subject by providing deeper and more detailed coverage of approximately four key topic areas where normative neurocognitive development can be contrasted with developmental disorders.

•Perception and Learning, Memory development, EF skills development
•Cognitive deficits, Williams Syndrome, Down Syndrome

Language Development & Language Disorders
•Child language development
•Atypical language development: SLI, ASD, Dyslexia, Speech & Language Delay, Speech & Language Therapy

Neurodevelopment
•The developing brain
•Brain dysfunctions, Cerebral palsy, Aphasia, Apraxia

Physical dysfunctions
•Body disorders, Eating disorders, Health issues

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:


Describe and discuss the main theories and methods in the area of typical and atypical cognitive and neurological development.


Critically evaluate current theories and research on neurocognitive development and disorders.


Work successfully in a group to design a hypothetical research study on a relevant topic.

Teaching Methods

The module consists of lectures and coursework support sessions. The lectures highlight the main theoretical and empirical issues and findings and direct the students’ reading. Coursework support sessions provide an opportunity to develop research ideas in discussion with other students and with the support of the module tutors.
