Module Aims
Aim 1
This module aims to provide a foundation of core knowledge into the role of sport in society and assists students developing an understanding of contemporary challenges in teaching school physical education and the basic knowledge for effective teaching of physical education. The module also provides the opportunity for a closer look at the roots and subsequent development of modern sport from a sociological and pedagogical perspective. Produces an overview of the historical and contemporary relationship between, physical activity, physical exercise, physical recreation, leisure, and sport that is necessary for informed professional practice in physical education and sports science. The module encourages the inquiries on the development of sport and physical education from pre-industrial society to contemporary society by looking at the social influences that shaped modern society. During the module students will begin to develop an underpinning knowledge base enabling them to develop an understanding of the complex nature of children and adolescents' learning in physical education and reflect on how physical education contributes to children's and adolescents' broader learning whilst also acting as the foundation for current and lifelong engagement in different forms of physical activity.

On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:
Teaching Methods
Key lectures will be delivered to help you understand the relationship between sports and socio-demographic factors (gender, age, race, etc.), social practices (doping, violence, etc.) and media. These will be supported by tutorials, practicals, students’ presentations and other teaching tools to help you apply critical thinking skills on contemporary issues in relation to the role of sport, physical activity and physical education in society.
Applications based assessments will allow you to identify fundamental teaching and coaching similarities and differences. The use of Elearn as an online resource will allow you to develop an understanding of the key concepts and practical applications during the module. The micro-teaching will enable you to design and deliver your own lesson plan to either children or adults

This module is assessed through an examination and a practical assessment.
