Module Aims
Aim 1
This module aims to give students an opportunity to understand how forensic psychology has developed with respect to increasing our understanding of the origins of offending behaviour, the assessment and treatment of offenders, and to provide an in-depth consideration of current issues specific to violent and sexual offenders.
Module Content
The content of this module covers three themes, namely (1) origins of violent and sexual offending behaviours; (2) assessment and intervention for violent and sexual offending behaviour, and (3) current issues in forensic psychology.
Indicative topics may include the following three themes:
Theme 1: Origins of offending behaviours
Origins (1) of violent offending
Origins (2) of sexual offending
Theme 2: Assessment and intervention for violent and sexual offending behaviour
Assessment (1) violent offending risk assessment
Assessment (2) sex offending risk assessment
Assessment (3) formulation (e.g. functional assessment)
Theme 3: Current issues in forensic psychology.
(1) stalking
(2) online exploitation
(3) psychopathy and PDs
(4) female offenders
(5) young offenders
INTENDED
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:
Teaching Methods
Material is delivered via lectures and directed reading. Lectures and seminars include sessions to explore and support the skills needed to compete the assessment.
Assessment Methods
This module is assessed through an in-class test and a coursework.
