Module Aims

Aim 1


To provide students with an opportunity to conduct an empirical investigation, under the supervision of a member of staff, thus applying their knowledge of research design and statistical analysis, and their skills in report writing. The topic may be in any area of psychology of interest to the student.

As appropriate for the topic within Psychology, subject to the approval of the module leader and ethical clearance.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:


Review and critically evaluate the literature in a chosen area of investigation.


Design a study that is suitable to investigate their chosen topic, to analyse it appropriately, and report their findings in a comprehensive written report.


Demonstrate an ability to work independently.

Teaching Methods

The student will work largely independently, under the guidance of their supervisor, on the design, analysis, and reporting of their findings. Students should expect to spend at least ten hours per week (or equivalent) on their project. Research skills are developed by students as appropriate within individual supervisory meetings, and this learning experience is informed by the research expertise of individual tutors.
