Module Aims
Aim 1
To support the student to make an informed decision of their critical position in the design industry.
Aim 2
To direct the student to establish a clear and critical rationale that will inform through research and underpin their practice decisions.
Aim 3
To develop the student’s critical understanding of the philosophies, design strategies and design work of others by networking with relevant contacts.
Module Content
Research in Context continues to inform the practice modules. You should adopt a more advanced use of reflective techniques and values through critically questioning the work of others and establishing your own position as makers and creators. You will look more closely at others working on similar topics and themes and interact with relevant people who can help to develop your practice.
An integral part of this module is a series of weekly lectures by a range of established practitioners from a variety of disciplines to introduce students to career pathways, creative practice, research and networking. You learn to understand the connectivity between the disciplines and have the choice of forging interdisciplinary links. You are then asked to reflect on how the work of others has a direct influence on your own practice.
You are also expected to engage in developing your own schedule of personal networking by contacting makers within your specialisation. Questions should be related to the theme of your project or the practice methodology itself. You are empowered during ‘Research Methodologies’ to understand the importance of emotional intelligence when framing your questions as well as considering ethics.
You should include visiting design companies, consultancies, exhibitions, museums, events as well to gain a full understanding of your subject specialism and your intended critical position within it.
Throughout the module, on-going reflection should be written and visual references collected in support of the module assignment.
All this research culminates in a position of practice report informed and driven by the research undertaken.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:
Teaching Methods
As independent learners, you are encouraged to set up a programme of personal design study visits over the semester. Taking an outward looking approach to industry will lead you into a networking activity that you will continue after studying on the MA. New connections will be realised and working methods discussed and recorded.
Students will reflect upon the work of the practitioners that they have seen over the course of the lecture series and those they have met or talked to personally and works they have visited. They are to develop a
discussion upon how these lectures, meetings and works explored, have influenced and helped to shape their own line of enquiry and research.
This module provides you with the skills to evaluate your growing experience and knowledge and how this is now helping to shape future ambitions and evolving creative thinking and practice.
Assessment Methods
This module is assessed through one Coursework and one Practical Assessment.
