Module Aims
Aim 1
To develop the students’:
Aim 2
knowledge and application of theory to underpin practical investigations.
Aim 3
research skills in conducting a review of relevant literature.
Aim 4
research skills in contextual reflection for developing and positioning their own practice.
Module Content
This module introduced the basic principles of research at post graduate level. Students will identify the research methods introduced and will relate this directly back to their own practice. These research methods will drive and underpin the practical work in the Reflective Practice Module. Students are expected to apply a range of research methods by exploring various literature and contextual elements.
Teaching commences with a series of lectures on how to identify and articulate different forms of enquiry, investigation and evaluation analysis within academic research.
This module equips students with the appropriate vocabulary, enabling them to express the nature of their research, formulate ideas, evidence their enquiry and communicate the exploratory nature of their project proposals.
Topics include an introduction to reflective practice, critical thinking, practice-based research methods; academic writing; introduction to research terminology; visual culture; literature and contextual review.
Issues addressed will be generic to all practice-based subject within the MA Programme. This approach facilitates the relevance of cross curricular study in creative practice and encourages cross discipline engagement as well as facilitating the understanding of comparability and differentiation that exists within practice-based subjects. It is also intended to broaden the student’s awareness of the wider scope of ‘research’ to make connections across the specialisms.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:
Teaching Methods
This module acts as a fundamental aspect of your overall Masters study by providing the skills to create a framework to underpin the theoretical and contextual part of your practical work. These skills should drive and underpin your practice and ensure that your practical work is informed.
Development and understanding of how research informs your practice will be in the form of a written literature and contextual review. You will learn about how qualitative and quantitative methods have informed and driven the work of other practitioners and use this information to understand and develop your own appropriate research skills. Emphasis will be placed on areas such as representation, resource limitation, diversity and sustainability as well as selecting appropriate methods of research for practice-based work.
You will be encouraged to acquire skills of systematic enquiry and reflective practice and are expected to make links between theory and practice by developing your own personal methods of investigations that
can be applied to further problem solving. These methods will then be applied to your line of enquiry in Reflective Practice.
Assessment Methods
This module is assessed through one Coursework and one Examination.
