Module Aims

Aim 1


To enable students to carry-out research into a topic relevant to their degree title.

To encourage students to engage in critical reading of published literature and/or critical examination of methods and/or practice.

To prepare students for postgraduate study and/or research in employment.

Research Project

Module Content

This module provides an opportunity for students to explore an aspect of their subject discipline. They will design and undertake a small scale research project with the aim of publishing a detailed project report describing their research finding that may lead to an undergraduate paper suitable for publication.

Learning Outcomes

On successful completion of this module, a student will be able to:


Apply a range of information-related research methods appropriate to the context and observing ethical principles.


Undertake critical thinking in order to evaluate information or data generated or discovered by applying appropriate research methods.


Apply communication and management skills in organising and disseminating project information.

Research Project

Teaching Methods

Students will be guided in identifying an area for research (if they have not done so already) and in selecting appropriate resources and research methods.
The teaching programme will deliver a series of workshops and seminars designed to introduce practical research methods. Regular tutorial meetings will provide opportunities for guidance and review of work done. Where possible tutors will facilitate the input of experts in the topic field and external feedback on student work.
