Priorities of Finland in the field of Public International Law

“Priorities of Finland in the Field of Public International Law – A Practitioner’s Point of View”

UCLan Cyprus School of Law Research Seminar 4, Thursday 21st March, 1.45-2.45pm (CY114)

Ms Anu Saarela
(Ambassador of Finland in Cyprus)

Strengthening the Rule of Law and supporting it through international cooperation is of utmost importance for Finland. There is a long tradition behind this active involvement. According to its program our present Government is committed to promoting the development of the Rule of Law, democracy and human rights both in its bilateral relations as well as in international organizations in a constructive and targeted manner. Part of this endeavour is participation in international co-operation in the field of public international law within the UN framework, the European Union and other international organizations. Practitioners of Public International Law deal daily with issues of implementing international treaties and regulations as well as with developing new norms and conduct.

Ms Saarela has been the Finnish Ambassador in Cyprus since 2012. A graduate of the University of Helsinki, prior to her arrival in Cyprus, Ms Saarela was for three years the Director of the Unit for Public International Law at the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
