Exploring Grief, Identity and Reconciliation in a Divided World

The 4th International Symposium on Restorative Justice officially opened on 16 June 2025 at UCLan Cyprus, bringing together peacebuilders, scholars, practitioners, and community leaders from across five continents to explore alternative justice and healing mechanisms in the face of rising global divisions.

Held in Cyprus, the only divided EU member state, the event was hosted in collaboration with the Restorative Justice for All (RJ4All) International Institute Europe and focused on the theme:
“Inter-community and inter-state conflicts: Peacebuilding and reconciliation – Preventing & addressing divisive language.”

The Opening Ceremony began with a powerful welcome by Dr Lilia Psalta, Assistant Professor in Psychology and Course Leader of the MSc Forensic Psychology at UCLan Cyprus. In her remarks, Dr Psalta emphasized the symbolic significance of the gathering in Cyprus:

“If trauma can be inherited, then so can healing. And maybe storytelling is one of the bridges between the two. Here in Cyprus, where history continues to echo in every divided street, today’s conversations felt especially meaningful. We are reminded that while we may carry inherited pain, we also carry the power to transform it.” – Dr Lilia Psalta

Keynotes and panel contributions included:

  • Prof. Theo Gavrielides, Founder and Director of RJ4All Europe, who spoke on restorative justice and the need for honesty, empathy, and community-driven justice.

“We are not here to offer easy solutions. We are here to speak honestly, to connect through our wounds, and to imagine what justice looks like when it is rooted in empathy and dignity.” Prof. Theo Gavrielides

  • Prof. John Braithwaite, renowned criminologist, Australian National University & RJ4All Patron (remote lecture), who reflected on the global significance of restorative dialogue.

“In all conflicts, we need to be practitioners of the politics of hope…wars prevented through conversation are the real measure of peace.”Prof. John Braithwaite

  • Dr Elena Papamichael, Representative of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, offered insight on peace, restorative education, and youth engagement.

The Opening Panel Discussion, moderated by Prof. Gavrielides, focused on peace, political grief, and the unacknowledged pain at the heart of community division, and featured:

  • Dr Lilia Psalta (UCLan Cyprus)
  • Penelope Griffith, Executive Director, Collaborative Solutions for Communities
  • Prof. Stéphanie Laulhé Shaelou, UCLan Cyprus & Founding Director of ICLAIM
  • Iro Michael, representing Truth Now & Hands Across the Divide
  • Marinella Gkiona, MSc Forensic Psychology Graduate, as Youth Ambassador

Continuing Across Cyprus

Following the powerful opening in Larnaca, the Symposium continues throughout Cyprus — in Limassol, Nicosia, Paphos, and rural regions — to further explore how restorative justice can respond to:

  • Environmental injustice
  • Mediation and conflict transformation
  • Bureaucratic harm and institutional abuse
  • Disenfranchised grief and informal reconciliation

The Symposium runs 15–22 June 2025, with participants from Australia, Brazil, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, New Zealand, the UK, and the USA. It is supported by numerous community, justice, and educational organizations committed to the vision of restorative, inclusive, and trauma-informed justice.
