Confidentiality Agreement

The services of the Psychological and Wellbeing Counselling Centre at UCLan Cyprus are governed by strict confidentiality regulations. This means that Staff may not share information about you with third parties (i.e., parents, friends or academics) without your written consent. If you wish to give us written consent to share information concerning yourself with a third party, you will reserve the right to withdraw this consent whenever you wish.

Exceptions to confidentiality

There are some rare cases where we have a legal obligation to disclose certain information without your consent, in order to ensure your own safety or the safety of others. These exceptions apply to the following cases:

1. Danger to your life or the safety of yourself or another person. If the trainee or licensed psychologist working with you has clear indications that your own life or safety or the safety of third parties is at stake, he or she may act accordingly, such as notifying a third party who could establish your safety (e.g., your medical doctor or a first degree relative) or on some occasions the police to ascertain yours and others safety.

For example, the confidentiality agreement may be breached:

1. When there is a disclosure or evidence of physical, sexual, or serious emotional abuse or neglect, which may lead to the loss of life.
2. When suicide is threatened or attempted by the service user.
3. When there is disclosure or evidence of serious self-harm (including drug or alcohol misuse that may be life-threatening).

2. Abuse or neglect of a minor, elderly or disabled person. In case we realize that a minor, elderly or disabled person is being abused or neglected, we are obliged to report it to the competent services.

3. In case a court decree is issued that requires it, the staff or any student intern of the Psychological and Wellbeing Counselling Centre is obliged to provide information from the files and / or to testify in court.

In situations in which confidentiality will need to be broken, the trainee or licensed psychologist working with you will first try to discuss the situation with you and obtain your consent, inform you of the contacts they will be making, and limit the information they share to those that are absolutely necessary to implement their safeguarding obligation.
