“CYCLING FOR MY HOMETOWN” AND CTO BEACH CLEAN-UP BY UCLAN CYPRUS
UCLan Cyprus organized a one-day event called “Cycling for My Hometown”, which fostered community spirit and environmental awareness. The event united students, residents of the bicommunal village of Pyla, and participants from the British Bases in Dhekelia. Starting from UCLan Cyprus, the group embarked on a cycling journey that passed through Pyla, a village known for its peaceful coexistence of Greek and Turkish Cypriots. The event concluded at CTO beach, where volunteers carried out a beach cleanup, focusing on removing marine litter and trash from the shoreline. This initiative not only promoted physical activity and community bonding but also emphasized the importance of environmental protection and sustainability.
BEE PROTECTION CAMPAIGN – THE ROLE OF BEES IN THE ENVIROMENT AND THEIR CONTRIBUTION TO HUMANITY BY THE INSTITUTE OF PROFESSIONAL STUDIES (IPS) AT UCLAN CYPRUS
The Institute of Professional Studies (IPS) at UCLan Cyprus has initiated a Bee Protection Campaign to highlight the essential role bees play in both the environment and human well-being. This campaign aims to increase public awareness about the importance of pollination and the threats bees face, such as climate change and habitat loss. Through this initiative, UCLan Cyprus is integrating bee conservation into its academic offerings, especially in fields like agriculture and livestock management, providing students with up-to-date knowledge of modern practices while emphasizing environmental protection.
The campaign includes a range of educational activities, including workshops, hands-on projects, and research on bee behaviour in response to climate change. These efforts not only provide practical knowledge but also aim to establish UCLan Cyprus as a hub for information on bee conservation and broader environmental sustainability. The campaign reflects the university’s commitment to both education and the preservation of vital ecosystems.
UCLAN CYPRUS SUPPORTS THE ‘SISSITIO’ (FOOD BANK) OF LARNAKA Sissitio of Larnaca daily distributes food portions to hundreds of people who for some reason cannot access this basic human need. For the daily preparation of the food, volunteers work on a daily basis with women who are unemployed but want to remain socially active in this kind of way. Τoday, 1,200 people, families continue to need and receive daily support from the Sissitio Larnakas, which offers its valuable services for some years now. UCLan Cyprus supports financially this great initiative since its creation.
COLLABORATION WITH ANTI-DRUGS ASSOCIATION OF LARNAKA UCLan Cyprus has a long-term collaboration with the Anti-drugs Association of Larnaka (SY.KA.NA.). Under a Memorandum of Understanding, both parties agreed the development of their relations for their mutual benefit and for the benefit of society. The Memorandum includes providing opportunities for internships for UCLan Cyprus Psychology students, joint conferences, seminars and workshops, exchange of staff for lectures and training courses and joint involvement of the two parties to research programs at national and European level.Every year UCLan Cyprus supports financially and in other ways SYKANA.
CYPRUS ASSOCIATION OF CANCER PATIENTS & FRIENDS UCLan Cyprus and the Cyprus Association of Cancer Patients & Friends has a fruitful partnership, in various areas of collaboration, including teaching, research and applied experience. In that respect, their broad objective is to enable the dissemination of high-end know-how and technology transfer to the members of both signatories so they can enhance their strategic position with regards to innovations in Health and Wellbeing, Data Management, Data Mining and Analytics, Statistics, Web & Mobile Computing, Cloud Computing, Business & Industry.
1ST RADISSON BLU INTERNATIONAL MARATHON OF LARNACA The announcement of the 1st Radisson Blu International Marathon of Larnaca was also accompanied by its cooperation with UCLan Cyprus. The British University of Cyprus was the Academic partner of the biggest sporting event of the year. The 1st Radisson Blu Larnaka International Marathon took place on Sunday, November 19th, 2017 and included a Marathon Race (42,195 km), a Half Marathon Race (21,095 km), 10 5km-corporate, 5km – individual and 1km Fun Race and Kids Race. Keeping with the framework of the collaboration between the Radisson Blu Larnaka International Marathon with the UCLan Cyprus, special events between the two parts also took place during, prior and after the big event.
UCLan Cyprus PROUDLY DONATED A WELL–RESPECTED AMOUNT TO ‘GOAL IN LIFE’ UCLan Cyprus proudly donated to the first charity – voluntary association of footballers, ‘Goal In Life’. The amount was gathered by the UCLan Cyprus staff and its’ Assistant Professor in Sports Business Management, Dr Christos Anagnostopoulos, who ran the 10k Marathon at the Larnaka International Marathon. Goal in Life’s vision is becoming one with the society of Cyprus and through its’ actions to cultivate principles and values such as charity, solidarity, social responsibility and social distribution. The British University of Cyprus is proud to be engaging with ‘Goal In Life’ and aims to build more synergies with this kind of organizations.
Pancyprian Volunteerism Coordinative Council
UCLan Cyprus has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Pancyprian Volunteerism Coordinative Council. The purpose of the Memorandum is to establish a framework for productive cooperation in areas of common interest between the two organisations for the development of joint actions that will promote volunteerism initiatives, develop the spirit of voluntary consciousness, and have a positive impact for Society with a variety of actions.
Pancyprian Association for the Welfare of the Blind (PSET)
UCLan Cyprus and PSET have established a long – standing meaningful relationship which supports actions aimed at upgrading the quality of life of visually impaired people. Aiming to financially support PSET, in March 2021, UCLan Cyprus and PSET organised a walk with Volunteer-Hiker Alexis Sofocleous. A Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between UCLan Cyprus and PSET, which will add to the framework of cooperation between the two organisations with additional activities within the framework of CSR.
