Welcome to UCLan Cyprus
THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
Get to know the British University of Cyprus
UCLan Cyprus is located in Larnaka, and it is now in its thirteenth year of operation. It is the first Branch Campus of the University of Central Lancashire and at the same time a fully licensed University in Cyprus. A unique and innovative model of a Cypriot and British University Educational Experience, accredited by the UK Quality Assurance Agency and the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education (CYQAA) respectively.
Built on strong academic foundations, the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan UK), our mother University, counts more than 190 years of history and is considered among the top 6.5% of all worldwide Universities by the Centre for World University Rankings (CWUR) 2020/21.
UCLan Cyprus operates under the academic umbrella of UCLan UK, and further to the latest political changes of the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union (BREXIT), it is considered a unique University, bridging the UK and Europe in terms of research, academic standards, student experience and student exchange.
The completion of studies at UCLan Cyprus will result in a double-awarded degree (two certificates) from the two Universities, UCLan UK and UCLan Cyprus, recognized not only in Cyprus and UK, but also across Europe and beyond.
Our students will also have the advantage of an exceptional student experience in every aspect of their University life, whether it is learning, personal support, facilities, accommodation, employability and social life, as well as personal development.
Bringing a world-class reputation for academic excellence and innovative thinking in Cyprus, our aim is to develop future business leaders and international entrepreneurs, with the skills and business acumen for success in the modern global economy. This means that we can offer a unique blend of knowledge, practical experience and modern relevance, to equip students with the qualifications and skills for the international market in employment. Many of our courses are also accredited by professional and statutory bodies, ensuring the standards expected by today’s businesses for all UCLan Cyprus students.
Welcome Messages
Mr. Floros Voniatis
CEO and Chair of the Council
It is with great pleasure to welcome you to our University!
As an introduction, let me start by explaining the competitive advantage of our University. The University of Central Lancashire, Cyprus (UCLan Cyprus), is the first Branch Campus of the University of Central Lancashire and at the same time a fully licensed and registered University in Cyprus. UCLan Cyprus is a unique and innovative model of a Cypriot and British University Educational Experience, approved and validated by both the Ministry of Education and Culture of Cyprus and the UK Quality Assurance Agency (QAA), for Higher Education.
The rewarding experience of a mutually supportive collaboration came into fruition in 2012 when Cyprus welcomed its first UK University, UCLan Cyprus, on the island. The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), the fourth largest University in the UK, located in Preston, through its recently developed strategy of developing educational satellites around the globe, showed a strong interest in Cyprus as the first step in this mission, primarily due to the geopolitical position and the large local demand for UK higher education in Cyprus. After researching the best location for their branch campus and the local procedures for setting up a University, UCLan chose Larnaka as the ideal strategic location to establish the first British University on the island.
It is widely known that universities are valuable contributors to local economies. Universities are institutions fairly resistant to the fluctuations of the economy allowing them to have a steady presence. The socioeconomic impact of UCLan Cyprus is derived either through knowledge creation, innovation, research and development, or via the direct and indirect income streams flowing into the surrounding economy.
The University is the first and only University in Larnaka and Famagusta region, and one of the biggest employers in the region with over 210 employees. In just a few years of operations, the value-added contribution of UCLan Cyprus has been significant. During the last years of low economic growth in Cyprus and Larnaka, the impact of student and employee activity, much of it occurring after traditional business hours, have helped to revitalize the economy through economic stimulus.
Our strategic vision is to build a leading, pioneering University campus, with a global reach at the crossroads of three continents (Europe, Asia and Africa), ensuring excellence in its provision of Higher Education, while it will be recognised for its commitment to the finest University experience, outstanding research, innovative learning and valuable engagement with industry and communities within Cyprus, the Eastern Mediterranean, the Middle East and further afield.
That is why we keep ensuring that the University’s infrastructure and facilities are such that will provide valuable benefits to students, staff, and of course to the local community, for many years to come. The quality of the amenities offered cannot be matched neither within the city nor the region. Thus, the reason UCLan Cyprus won the sought-after award for the Most Innovative Educational Facility, amongst top competition from UK, Europe, Middle East and Africa.
In addition to the exceptional facilities, the university’s programmes and services contribute positively to the quality of life in the area. Our philosophy has always been to be sensitive to how the local economy and the citizens can benefit from the combination of our capital spending, the employment opportunities that result from University operational needs, and the many cultural, educational, and social services delivered by our faculty, staff, and students.
We are very proud of our commitment to our students, our staff, and the social and corporate community, locally and internationally.
Professor Irene Polycarpou
Rector
A warm welcome to the University of Central Lancashire Cyprus (UCLan Cyprus), the innovative British University of Cyprus.
Since its establishment in 2012, UCLan Cyprus has positioned itself firmly at the forefront of higher education and research in Cyprus and abroad. UCLan Cyprus is committed to academic excellence and in offering higher educational services to cater the growing and continuously evolving needs of the society. Our aim is to prepare students to become future leaders, competent and ethical professionals, possessing the ability to work in a global environment.
The University’s vision is to be recognised as a world-class, research-led University, competing successfully and sustainably within a national and international market. To achieve its vision, the University’s strategic development areas are based on three main pillars, which they are all gracefully combined. These pillars are:
• Education: focusing on high quality lifelong education through the offering of innovative programmes and curriculum as well as outstanding student experience and development.
• Research: focusing on interdisciplinary research projects with wide impact, high quality publications and development of a strong research community.
• Service and Outreach: focusing on the University’s engagement with the wider community and transfer of knowledge.
Through a unique and innovative curriculum that reflects current and future industry practices and needs, we offer a wide range of Undergraduate and Postgraduate academic programmes in a diverse set of disciplines. Across all our programmes, we follow a methodological approach to curriculum development influenced by specific discipline standards and teaching and learning methodologies. Of course, even if we develop the most innovative curriculum, it cannot be successful unless it is combined with an effective curriculum delivery. Thus, for all our programmes, we ensure that curriculum delivery combines research informed and industry informed teaching, which prepares graduates for diverse careers in the international market. Beyond the facilitation of the development of students’ course specific knowledge and skills, all our programmes aim at developing students’ 21st century and transferable skills, including collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, communication, technology literacy, leadership, independent thinking, self-motivation, professionalism and ethics. Nowadays such skills are considered necessary to succeed in a competitive and diverse global work environment.
Our curriculum is delivered by an outstanding group of scholars who are experts in their field and are internationally recognised for their knowledge, research output and contributions to the scientific community. Many hold esteemed appointments on governmental and European Union advisory committees and professional bodies, evidence of the high recognition of their work by their peers. Aside from their scientific contributions, academics transfer their knowledge to the community through the organisation of specialised seminars and trainings open to the public, especially for pressing matters that may be of concern to the community.
Of equal importance is the University’s commitment to provide an exceptional student experience through engagement activities within and beyond the curriculum and through the utilisation of state-of-the-art facilities, educational technologies and effective educational pedagogies. To ensure this, the University has developed strong partnerships with industry, community and other organisations, which contribute to the development and delivery of course curriculum as well as student engagement activities within their discipline.
Our vibrant and diverse community of students, faculty and partners can provide a nurturing environment for all of us to learn, grow and achieve our aspirations.
