A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between UCLan Cyprus and International Physical Literacy Association

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between UCLan Cyprus and International Physical Literacy Association (IPLA) on the 14th of August, establishing a framework for collaboration between the two esteemed organisations.

The two parties had agreed on a collaboration framework for developing joint activities of common interest, aiming to create a synergy between academia and society, offering benefits to both parties involved. Under this collaboration, students pursuing their Sport and Exercise Sciences studies at UCLan Cyprus will gain specific expertise in developing programmes, services, and advocacy material to support the continued awareness of the positive implications of physical literacy for persons of all abilities and ages.

The collaboration capitalises on the respective strengths of the British University of Cyprus and IPLA. As a leading academic institution, UCLan Cyprus offers excellence in research capabilities and academic expertise. IPLA, a globally recognised organisation, co-ordinate a networked community that encourages dialogue between practitioners, researchers, and policymakers to facilitate and support the adoption, evolution and promotion of physical literacy in communities worldwide.

On behalf of UCLan Cyprus, the MoU was signed by the Rector of the University, Professor Irene Polycarpou, and on behalf of IPLA, by the Chair of the Association, Mr Nigel Green.

Dr. Efstathios Christodoulides, Lecturer and Course Leader in BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science at UCLan Cyprus, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating that: “This collaboration marks a significant milestone in our commitment to promoting physical literacy and overall well-being among our students and the broader community. Physical literacy is a fundamental component of a healthy and active lifestyle. It encompasses the knowledge, physical competence, motivation, and confidence needed to value and take responsibility for engaging in physical activities and sports throughout one’s life. As we strive to nurture holistic development, well-rounded individuals, and future professionals, this MoU with IPLA underscores our dedication to fostering a culture of physical literacy on campus and beyond.”

He also highlighted the significance of Enhanced Educational Opportunities, Community Outreach, Global Networks and Research Collaborations, emphasising that: “this MoU with IPLA aligns perfectly with our mission to equip our students with the tools they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Together, we will drive forward the importance of physical literacy in education and society, making a lasting impact on the well-being of our students and communities.”

Both UCLan Cyprus and IPLA expressed their delight in starting this transformative cooperation, which marks the beginning of an exciting chapter for education and research.
