On 23rd June 2016, a national referendum was held over whether the UK should remain in or whether it should leave the EU. In total, 17,410,742 people, 51.9% of those who voted, opted in favour of the UK leaving the EU. On 13th July 2016, this outcome resulted in the resignation of David Cameron and the appointment of Theresa May as his successor as Prime Minister of the UK. In view of subsequent developments in the Supreme Court and in the Parliament of the UK in Westminster, the UK is expected in March 2017 to serve a notice on the EU under Article 50 of the Treaty on European Union and, thereby, to enter formal negotiations with the aim of facilitating the exit of the UK from the EU by the beginning of 2019.
Professor Sir Christopher Pissarides will explore some of these seismic developments and the economic and trade-related implications of Brexit for the EU, for the UK and for what will become the remaining 27 Member States of the EU, including the Republic of Cyprus.
Date: Tuesday 4 April 2017
