UCLan Cyprus School of Law Mooting Competition 2022-2023

The School of Law of the University of Central Lancashire in Cyprus, UCLan Cyprus, in cooperation with the Student Law Society, successfully organised and held the students’ Annual Mooting Competition in March 2023.

On the 15th of February 2023, the Semi-Final round of the mooting competition took place in the Moot Court Room of UCLan Cyprus. Mooting affords all law students of UCLan Cyprus an opportunity to apply the theoretical knowledge gained from lectures and apply it to a practical scenario at the heart of a moot.

The Semi-Finalists in Round One were Tadala Claire Dzimadzi & Anupamaditya who acted on behalf of the Appellant plus Despoina Theofanous & Georgiana Nicolaou who acted on behalf of the Respondent.

The Semi-Finalists in Round Two were Eva Manolova & Tasos Perdikos who acted on behalf of the Appellant plus Bilean Daniel Beraki & Ksenia Fedoseeva who acted on behalf of the Respondent.

Dr Katerina Kalaitzaki, Dr Demetra Loizou, Dr Nasia Hadjigeorgiou and Dr Lida Pitsilidou were acting as the judges of the Mooting Semi-Finals and decision-making committee for the finalists. All pairs prepared well and delivered a professional performance which impressed the attendees.

The winning teams from the two Semi-Final rounds then qualified for the Final of the Mooting Competition that was held on the 22nd of March 2023 followed by a Reception at the University premises. The finalists were Bilean Daniel Beraki & Ksenia Fedoseeva who acted for the Respondent competing against Despoina Theofanous & Georgiana Nicolaou who acted for the Appellant.

The final round was judged by a panel of three judges.  The chairman of the panel was His Honour Judge Nick Sanders, Resident Judge and H M Coroner of the Sovereign Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia. The other members of the panel were our Law Lecturers Dr Katerina Kalaitzaki and Dr Demetra Loizou.

Both pairs prepared well and delivered a professional performance which impressed the attendees, including the distinguished guests. Nevertheless, there can only be one winning pair which is why congratulations are due to Bilean Daniel Beraki and Ksenia Fedoseeva who deservedly became the champions of the Mooting Competition of the academic year 2022-2023.

When he announced the outcome of the moot, His Honour Judge Nick Sanders commented on the excellent advocacy skills of the four students.

The University is grateful to His Honour Judge Nick Sanders for taking time out of his busy schedule to visit UCLan, Cyprus.  We hope to see him again soon.  After all, it is important for law students to supplement their studies with the knowledge to be gained from experienced judges who are willing to pass on their wisdom and to inspire the next generation.
